We don't make you wait for an exam, and - in terms of both timely treatment and your own peace of mind - that's important. At Spa Diva Medical Center, we schedule an appointment promptly, around your timetable and needs, and perform the procedure quickly so you can back to your day.
Getting the Facts.
A simple examination of your cervix, a colposcopy is a short and painless procedure involving a small scope that allows a physician to get a closer look at abnormal areas of tissues. It's so simple, it takes less than half an hour - usually just 10-15 minutes. At Spa Diva Medical Center, our top-quality physicians perform your colposcopy in a soothing, discreet office environment that puts you at ease and gives you the peace of mind that comes from receiving the very best in diagnostic care.
When a Pap smear is conducted, the doctor is looking for abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix. Those changes, called dysplasia, are usually not cancerous. If not treated, though, some dysplasias can become cancer of the cervix.
Certain things that irritate the cervix can increase your chance of getting dysplasia:
- Cigarette smoking
- Some strains of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
- Sexual intercourse as an early teen
Safe and Simple.
As part of a colposcopy, a doctor may repeat your Pap smear. Then, vinegar will be sprayed into your vagina to clean the cervix and help spotlight abnormal areas. A small tissue sample might be removed from your cervix or cervical canal and sent to the lab for further study. When it's done, you might feel a mild pinch or cramp.
What to Expect After Your Colposcopy.
- You should be able to drive and resume normal activities
- You might have mild vaginal spotting for a few days
- Monsel’s paste, used to stop bleeding if a biopsy is required, might cause a clumpy, blackish discharge
- You may resume sexual intercourse within 24 hours
