Hysteroscopy provides a way for a physician to look inside your uterus. A hysteroscope is a thin, telescope-like instrument that is inserted into the uterus through the vagina and cervix. Hysteroscopy is minor surgery that can be performed with local, regional or general anesthesia - sometimes no anesthesia is needed. There is little risk involved with this procedure for most women.

Some of the reasons a hysteroscopy may be performed include:

• Locate and evaluate the cause of uterine bleeding, such as uterine fibroids, when blood loss is severe
• Find the cause of bleeding after menopause
• Discover whether a problem in the shape or size of the uterus, or if scar tissue in the uterus, is the cause of infertility
• Examine the uterine openings to the fallopian tubes. If the tubes are blocked, the tubes may be opened with special tools passed through the hysteroscope
• Find the possible cause of repeated miscarriages

There are two types of hysteroscopy. Diagnostic hysteroscopy is performed to examine the uterus for signs of abnormality. Operative hysteroscopy is performed to treat a diagnosed abnormality. The operative method involves the insertion of small instruments through a sheath covering the hysteroscope to enable the gynecologist to perform a variety of therapeutic procedures. Diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy can be performed together or as separate procedures, depending on the patient and the nature of the patient's medical condition.
