LAP-BAND obesity surgery is performed laparoscopically, requiring only tiny incisions, and places an inflatable band around the upper part of the stomach. The new, small upper stomach pouch and a narrowed outlet limit the stomach capacity and increase the feeling of fullness. A subsequent reduction in food intake results in weight loss.

Once implanted, the band can be tightened or loosened via a balloon on its inner surface that can be inflated or deflated with saline in a matter of minutes.
